A House sitting job involves living at someone's house or property for an extended period of time and watching over the security and performing basic housekeeping functions. You probably would be asked to perform regular house upkeep duties like lawn mowing, cleaning, garbage removal, mail collection and pet sitting. Things that you would normally do if you lived there.
The upside to house sitting is that you can live rent free. A house sitter doesn't have the stress and responsibility of property taxes, mortgage payments, utilities, etc. You are providing a service to the homeowner that allows the house to be kept in good shape and be lived in to prevent vandalism and burglaries. It is a win-win situation for both parties.
There are couples who have traveled for a year or more house sitting on the way in order to see parts of the country they wanted to see. All for rent free. One man house sat in a cottage on the Oregon Coast overlooking the ocean for 6 months while the owners were snowbirds in Mexico. He finished writing his new novel.
